Course Summary In this workshop we’ll explore the art of the Irish winter poem, reflecting on the season as we near the winter solstice. In each session, we’ll read and discuss a poem, drawing out its finest elements before writing our own original poems in response. Central themes of the works selected include memory, sensory experience, time and communion. Named for the last full moon of the year—the Long Night’s Moon—this workshop will delve into winter’s depths while also celebrating light emerging out of darkness through the soon-to-be lengthening days. Towards the end of the workshop we’ll carve out space for meditating on individual poetic aspirations for the new year, including conversation around sustaining a regular artistic practice and publishing.
Course Outline Over four weeks we will collaborate around close readings of four poems. This will be followed by a guided creative exercise for generating new work in response.
Course Outcomes Writers will come away with new poems, receive feedback on work-in-progress, and discover fresh approaches to the art of the winter poem.
Course Leader Grace Wilentz’s debut collection, The Limit of Light (The Gallery Press, 2020) was named one of the best books of the year in The Irish Independent and The Irish Times. She is recipient of a Next Generation Artist Award and a Literature Bursary from The Arts Council / An Comhairle Ealaíon. Grace is currently inaugural Writer in Residence at Notre Dame in Dublin. Her new collection, Harmony (Unfinished) will be published in October, 2024.
